What is Endowed Progress?
Apps hand you a head start: a profile that is already 25% complete, two free stamps on a loyalty card, bonus XP for signing up. Progress you did not earn still feels like yours, and abandoning it feels like a loss.
Where it comes from
Nunes & Dreze, loyalty card study (2006)
How it hooks you
Exploits loss aversion: unearned progress feels owned, so quitting feels like throwing something away.
What the research shows
In the original study, car-wash cards with 2 free stamps out of 10 were completed by 34% of customers versus 19% for empty 8-stamp cards, despite identical effort.

How to resist it
Count only the effort still ahead of you. A free head start costs you nothing to walk away from.
