Deceptive Design

What is Confirmshaming?

Opt-out buttons use manipulative wording to make you feel guilty or embarrassed for declining. Phrasing like 'No thanks, I hate saving money' is specifically designed to nudge you into accepting the offer.

Where it comes from

Coined by Harry Brignull (2010)

How it hooks you

Exploits self-image: framing refusal as a character flaw adds social pressure to a choice that should have none.

What the research shows

Princeton's crawl of 11,000 shopping sites found dark patterns on more than 11% of them, with confirmshaming documented across dozens of major retailers.
